Learn the Four Native Western Conifers

  • Hoyt Arboretum 4000 Southwest Fairview Boulevard Portland, OR, 97221 United States (map)

• What we'll do
On this short walk through the arboretum, we'll meet four types of trees that grow all over Portland, adorning parks, yards and landscapes. You have certainly seen them already. It may come as a surprise they are not quite native locally to Portland. You'd start finding them on your next trip to the ocean, to Mt. Hood, or just over the Cascade crest.
These can be tricky to tell apart from local natives. The arboretum is a great place to see them side by side, and learn the fine differences. You can look forward to spotting these neighbors of the wider West in their natural setting when you travel to other parts of Oregon and further south. In the meantime, it will enrich your knowledge of our Portland urban forest.
(Note: This is NOT a repeat of "Four Major Northwest Conifers". These are four MORE trees!)

• What to bring
Dress for the weather. If you're not used to spending time outdoors, wear a few more layers than you think you will need. Note the map location; the pavilion, not the visitor center.

• Important to know
Total distance about 1 mile, somewhat up-and-down with about 300 ft elevation gain. Most of the route is on walking trails, with some paved road. Heavy rain or snow will cancel, but a few sprinkles or a bit of snow on the ground is OK.
